Self Portrait

Model: Josh Rabang
This is a self portrait which was taken at Union Square in San Francisco, California. Time taken: near noon. A principle of design is the emphasis put on the bottom half of my body. Also an element of art found is the space of the subject and his environment: it creates more of an emphasis on the subject.

Scanner Art

This image was made by using images created through scanning objects on a scanner. The type of art created through this method is called 'Scanner art.' I scanned images using a college lanyard, my hand, a five dollar bill, my student ID, and a gift card. Also, I used an image from the internet as a background. This dream-like image has several aspects to it. The repitition of stars creates a unity that adds to the "out-of-this-world" feel and the line created by the lanyard attracts eyes towards the subject: Abraham Lincoln/Michael Jordan.

Choice Photo

Model: Andrew Madlambayan
This picture is of the model and his car. It was taken at night in a parking garage in Brisbane, California. It was taken using a fast shutter speed and a low exposure. An element of art found is the shape of the model and his car. The picture is well balanced through the symmetry of the model and car.

Ansel Adams Nature Photography

This picture emulates the style of photographer Ansel Adams. This was taken in Brisbane, California during the late afternoon. It was taken in color but changed to black and white and also post-processed/editted in Photoshop to create a very dramatic image, which is very common in most Ansel Adams photos. Also, an element of art found is the line created by the path and a principle of design found is the movement created by the path.

Candid Portrait (Mercy Girl)

This picture is of a random Mercy Burlingame High School student. She is at her locker talking with her friends. This was taken in the morning during class time in one of the hallways. I took this picture quickly as I was walking by. An element of art found is space, which can be seen by the subject being in focus while the girl to the right of her is not focused. A principle of design is the unity created by the locker, her uniform, and her friend--it gives a school-like atmosphere.

A la Helen Levitt

This picture was taken under the influence of the style of Helen Levitt. Her candid, street photography inspired me to capture an essence of San Francisco in a picture. This photo, taken at Fisherman's wharf, is of a street performer in her natural state. Much like Helen Levitt, this photo was also taken in black and white, creating a value which leads the eyes to the subject and her surroundings. This environmental portrait emphasizes the subject through balance and is also symmetrical throughout.

Photoshop altered image

This is a Photoshop altered image created through multiple shots and combined into one image. The movement created by the multiple figures is what catches the viewers' eyes. There is also symmetry created by the two walls and staircase. This image was taken at Ocean Beach, San Fracisco in the mid-afternoon. Model: Tyrell Bernardo

Shutter Photo

This picture was meant to demonstrate the shutter speed of a DSLR camera. In order to capture this picture of fireworks, I had to increase the shutter speed and have a low ISO in order to have a clean/noiseless photo while also being able to capture the movement of the fireworks. This was taken on July 4th, 2009 in Foster City. The contrast of the colors of the fireworks creates a very patriotic and lively feel while the circular pattern created by the explosions attracts the eyes of the image's viewers.

Environmental Portrait (Halloween)

This is a picture of my brother, Jonathan, with a Halloween mask on. The picture was taken indoors, at night, with only a light source coming from an external flash placed below the subject. Also, the flash had a blue gel placed on it to produce the blue essence of the picture. The purpose of the blue was to give a picture a scary and dark feel. Along with the pose of my brother, the emphasis created by placing him the middle of the picture adds to the spooky feeling. The photo is well balanced due to the symmetry as well.

Formal Portrait

Model: Marty Koenigs
In this portrait, I asked my model to have an angry demeanor, which he definitely showed with his hands, arms, posture, and facial expressions. This picture was taken in Mercy B's art studio and with one light to the right of the subject. Also the camera was placed on a tripod to avoid any camera shake. The picture was taken in black and white which moves viewers' eyes from the darker parts of the picture to the lighter parts. In this situation, one's eyes are moved directly to the model's face because of the value. The model's arms also create lines which lead to his face.

Principle of Design

This photo represents the Principle of Design known as 'proportion.' On the bottom right third-line, one can notice a surfer in the ocean. The purpose for the inclusion of this surfer was to compare his/her size with the ocean and the clouds. It is obvious how small the surfer is compared to the ocean. The black and white color choice as well as the situation of the photo give the image an ominous feel--as if this ocean and its waves are larger than life. This was taken at Ocean Beach, San Francisco in the late afternoon.

Element of Art

The Element of Design represented by this picture is the 'line.' Lines are found throughout the whole picture: the heads of both sets of street lights to the left, the greenery to the left of the sidewalk, the sidewalk itself, and also the lines on the sidewalk. These lines create movement, which is a principle of design, which leads the eye to the center of the image. This photo was taken outside of the South San Francisco Bart station sometime in the afternoon on a cloudy day.

Sunprint Image

This photo was created using a special material known as "sun film." Objects such as keys, a lanyard, and a paper clip were laid out on the film and left under the sun for a number of minutes. After the time it was exposed to the sun, the film was developed by being submerged in water. This is the resulting image. The natural blue color which comes from the film gives this abstract image a cool/calm feel. One may also identify a human-like figure within the circle created by the lanyard and keys. A scanner was used to transfer the sun film image onto the computer's hard drive.
